Formulations Scientist

The Formulations Scientist supports Product Development in developing liquid nutritional supplements. This position requires close customer contact and must be able to balance commercial opportunity with scientific expertise in all aspects of formulation. Formulate work plans and conduct problem solving on complex chemical development/production projects.

Formulation and Testing:
  • Plan and execute formulation trials for dietary supplement customers, ensuring accurate preparation and testing.
  • Organize and perform routine laboratory experiments, maintaining precise and accurate records of results.
  • Prepare detailed reports for statistical analysis and archive samples and data for traceability and compliance.
  • Data Management and Documentation:
  • Analyze data, document results, and enter them into the global formulation database.
  • Write comprehensive Fitness for Use (FFU) documents to justify the use of non-conforming raw materials while ensuring compliance with quality and regulatory standards.
  • Collaborate with QA and Regulatory teams to validate material acceptability and provide support for business continuity.
  • Process Management and Approvals:
  • Review and approve Master Batch Records to ensure alignment with manufacturing and quality specifications.
  • Manage the workflow within Salesforce, including assigning, approving, and rejecting quotes.
  • Assist team members in understanding the quote process, provide guidance on correcting inaccuracies, and ensure timely and accurate processing.
  • Team Training and Development:
  • Act as a trainer and mentor to new staff, providing onboarding and ongoing training on company systems, processes, and standards.
  • Oversee the onboarding, training, and daily tasks of interns, ensuring they gain meaningful experience and contribute effectively.
  • Offer ongoing coaching to team members to enhance their skills and performance.
  • Supplier and Equipment Management:
  • Manage the procurement of necessary laboratory supplies and ensure traceability by reviewing and archiving supplier receipts.
  • Evaluate and validate new suppliers annually to maintain quality standards.
  • Calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment and reactive media to ensure operational efficiency.
  • Laboratory Operations:
  • Schedule and coordinate laboratory activities on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
  • Develop and optimize procedures and techniques within established laboratory guidelines.
  • Ensure cleanliness and good housekeeping standards are upheld in the laboratory.
  • Report any issues or potential problems that could affect laboratory operations to the department manager.
  • Leadership Support:
  • Support the AD, R&D by stepping in during their absence to manage workflow and daily operations as part of the succession plan.
  • Safety and Compliance:
  • Conduct all activities in a safe and professional manner, adhering to company policies, procedures, and regulatory standards, including SOIs, GLPs, GCPs, and GMPs.
  • Continuous Improvement and Strategic Initiatives:
  • Continuously seek opportunities to improve group processes and laboratory operations to address challenges and enhance efficiency.
  • Strive to develop new techniques and ensure alignment with strategic objectives.
  • Flexibility and Attendance:
  • Maintain regular on-site attendance as an essential function of the role.
  • Be available to work additional hours, including weekends, holidays, and overtime, and travel as required.

Key Requirements:

  • Bachelors, Masters, or PhD in Chemistry, Food Science, Natural Medicine, or similar discipline
  • Must have a good working knowledge of GMPs, FDA, and other regulations pertaining to the dietary supplement industries
  • Must have good communication skills both verbal and written and must have proficient computer skills
  • Experience in formulation in the dietary supplement industry
  • Formulation experience with liquids
