Scientist - Cell Expression & Engineering

United Kingdom, Cambridge

Today, Lonza is a global leader in life sciences operating across three continents. While we work in science, there’s no magic formula to how we do it. Our greatest scientific solution is talented people working together, devising ideas that help businesses to help people. In exchange, we let our people own their careers. Their ideas, big and small, genuinely improve the world. And that’s the kind of work we want to be part of.

The role:

We are recruiting a Scientist with a background in cell expression technologies to join our R&D Cell Engineering and CLC group at our Cambridge site. This is an outstanding opportunity to be at the forefront of developing next-generation, industrially relevant cell expression platforms.

This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role in advancing expression systems and services for the efficient production of complex therapeutic proteins and contributing to world-class scientific breakthroughs!

Key responsibilities:
  • Contribute to the delivery of new CHO-based mammalian expression hosts and vector systems for the expression of complex therapeutic proteins

  • Explore innovative ideas to optimise the cell line development (CLD) process including the use of automation equipments & novel technologies

  • Culture mammalian cell lines in flasks and small-scale bioreactors and perform analytical procedures as required by the project

  • Plan, execute, and monitor experiments using the Ambr®15 automated bioreactor platform

  • Troubleshoot technical issues with the Ambr®15 system and liaise with vendors/technical support as needed

  • Collate, analyse, evaluate and sign-off data to produce good quality information and traceable records under the direction of the project lead.

  • Support the development of study plans & other relevant documents

  • Present results in written and oral reports.

  • Actively keep abreast of relevant academic literature (e.g., in the field of cell engineering and expression technologies)

  • Contribute ideas and opinions to scientific discussions to aid the development of new technologies

  • Working as a team player and working with a high degree of flexibility

Key requirements:
  • BSc/MSc Degree in Life Sciences, Molecular Biology, or a related field.

  • Practical experience within R&D in industrial or academic settings.

  • Hands-on experience in mammalian cell culture, stable transfections, single cell insolation and bioreactor operations (experience with Beacon and Ambr®15 is highly desirable).

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple experiments in parallel.

  • Familiarity with implementation/development of automation for cell line screening & CLD process optimisation.

  • A proactive attitude to working and solving challenging problems

Approximate ideal subdivision:
  • Planning experiments/work and writing electronic lab notebook up (10%)

  • Practical - Molecular biology and/or cell culture (80%)

  • Lab Maintenance (e.g. prep of T/C hoods) (5%)

  • Overhead work (time sheets/training departmental meetings etc.) (5%)

Every day, Lonza’s products and services have a positive impact on millions of people. For us, this is not only a great privilege, but also a great responsibility. How we achieve our business results is just as important as the achievements themselves. At Lonza, we respect and protect our people and our environment. Any success we achieve is no success at all if not achieved ethically.

People come to Lonza for the challenge and creativity of solving complex problems and developing new ideas in life sciences. In return, we offer the satisfaction that comes with improving lives all around the world. The satisfaction that comes with making a meaningful difference.
